Substance: More Than Just Cars
Driven Stories readers already had the chance to meet Michał and Daniel in our article about the extraordinary Unimog. This time, we caught up with them in an entirely different setting, at Substance in Łódź. Few people know that for several years they have also been heavily involved in the events world, shaping this gathering that brings automotive passion together with a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
The velodrome
Anyone who stepped onto the track immediately felt they had entered a unique space, surrounded by a concrete oval, full of cars and people. After a one-year break, the organisers decided to change the event's location. The choice fell on the K.S. Społem velodrome. At first glance, the raw arena might have seemed unconventional, but it quickly became clear that it gave the event an entirely new character. Cars positioned on the steep banking looked as though they had frozen mid-sprint, suspended on the edge of a turn. The incline amplified the effect, arranging the cars into a dynamic, almost cinematic scene. In the centre, on the grassy infield, there was a stage, a chill-out zone, and more cars, spread out more loosely and creating a contrast with the taut geometry of the vehicles on the banks. The whole thing looked like a carefully planned set piece, making natural use of the space.
For insiders, now open
Substance has long been regarded as an event "for insiders." Intimate, atmospheric, with the feel of a social gathering rather than a large trade show. A select crowd of people who know exactly why they're there. This time, however, the organisers opened the doors wider. Throughout the weekend, visitors could come in, soak up the atmosphere, and see why Substance has firmly established itself on the calendar of Polish automotive events. For many, it was the first chance to experience that particular mix of cars, music, and good times that has built the event's reputation over the years.
After dark
But Substance is not just about cars. It's also an event with a soul. When dusk fell, the track transformed into a stage styled after the vibe of the '80s and '90s. Attendees dressed up in era-appropriate tracksuits, colourful sports jackets, and iconic sneakers, everything associated with the golden age of automotive pop culture. The lights and the energy of the crowd created the atmosphere of an open-air club celebration. A distinctive element of this edition were the white balaclavas, a running motif that gave the whole thing a decidedly provocative edge. It's ideas like these that show Substance builds its identity above all through creativity and imagination.
The cars
Walking around the track, you could feel that the range of cars on display was truly vast. A Toyota Cressida stood slightly to one side, drawing attention with its classic lines and calm character that set it apart from the more aggressive silhouettes around it. Elsewhere, Supras and Skylines clustered together, cars that have stirred emotions for years and are absolute icons of Japanese motoring. Alongside them, Nissan had a strong showing too: from Z cars to S-chassis models, the S14 and S15, which continue to fire the imagination of drift and JDM culture fans. Further along, you could stumble upon smaller curiosities like a Honda Beat, but it was those larger legends that set the tone for the entire scene and drew the most eyes.
On the other side, German machinery dominated. Rows of BMWs in various guises, from classic saloons to sportier coupés, with the legendary M3 leading the charge. Next to them, Volkswagens across the full spectrum, from a Beetle to an atmospheric T1 Samba that looked as though it was just waiting to whisk a crew of surfers off to the beach, all the way to a rare Kurierwagen.
There was a Scandinavian accent too. A beautiful Volvo Amazon, its simple elegance contrasting with the more aggressive lines of its neighbours. The picture was completed by newer Porsches and Audis, whose presence confirmed that Substance brings different eras and styles together into one cohesive whole.
The atmosphere
The atmosphere was relaxed and easy-going. Some settled into the chill zone, others circled between cars, stopping at the more interesting models. Conversations and laughter formed a constant backdrop. All it took was a casual remark and within moments you'd be chatting as if with an old friend. Often it turned out that a person you only knew from Instagram was standing right next to you, and an online acquaintance suddenly turned into a face-to-face meeting. Substance proves that what makes an event truly great is, above all, the atmosphere. The right space, a good idea, and a group of people who know why they've come together, that's what creates its uniqueness. Thanks to this, Substance has been steadily building its legend for several years now, and with each edition it attracts more and more people looking for something fresh, authentic, and far from the formula of big-scale events.
